Social Impacts of Alcohol Related Harm

The social impact of alcohol use numerous and range from relationship and family difficulties to injuring self and others. Below is a small selection of social difficulties associated with hazardous drinking:

    • Relationship Difficulties
      - The majority of couples seeking relationship counselling report arguments related to drinking. Alcohol increases the chances of conflict, reduces the ability to think clearly and to select appropriate responses when needed.

    • Work and Occupational Difficulties
      -
Since alcohol reduces the ability to deal with stress, excessive drinking can lead to reduced work performance and occupational functioning. Professional relationships and quality of work often deteriorate, leading to increased work related stress.

    • Aggression
      - Alcohol is a major contributing factor in incidences of verbal and physical aggression. Hazardous alcohol use increses the risk of being both the perpetrator and the victim of aggression.

    • Accidents and Injuries
      - Alcohol is a major cause of accidents and serious injuries. Driving while intoxicated can cause injuries not only to the person driving a veichle, but to passengers and bystandards as well.
